I am a UK based artist and have just finished my degree in BA Fine Art at Birmingham City University.
Throughout my practise I have focused on self through making self-portraits. Recently I have been exploring this theme by creating 3D wire pieces based on my own body and making drawn studies of these. I have continued this process by making images of the negative shapes created. I am interested in how physical appearance informs one’s own identity and feelings of self-worth as well as the effect it has on other people’s perceptions and judgements of a person. I have been involved in stripping away the identifiable features that people see and make judgements about on first meeting, removing the components that make up a perceived identity. The process of removing these details reduces the body to an outline or essence of itself. I hope this work will be considered in relation to women taking control of their own image, as part of a movement towards body positivity and a comment on the negative impacts of existing stereotypes.
