Hi, my name is Barney. I am an architecture student at Birmingham City University, interested in modernising our cities and homes to create sustainable communities. My work is focused on creating a clear narrative that everyone can experience, directed at making our everyday lives more engaged with other people and integrating long-term strategies into design work.
My final project is the ‘Food Transmutation Hub’, a centre that primarily functions as an infrastructure element that eliminates the need for globalisation by reintroducing localisation. The site is a reimagined allotment space that caters to public needs and food growth, forming an organic machine that produces its own fuel, recycles its own produce, creates fertiliser, and expands into and retrieves from its community, an active intervention in educating us about food waste and revealing human and planetary benefits.
This innovative space encourages a new bond between people, reconnecting sites that have lost opportunities and require reformation. Contrasting with the typical nature of Bordesley Green, the transformation of local materials, the adaptation of infrastructure, and new engagement from residents will display the hidden potential of our food cycles.
