This is where a visitor's consciousness is taken to then be sent to the digital archives below. The space is lush and green to provide a comfortable environment for the individual nearing death.
The Capsule's ground floor houses another of its signature spaces. At its heart lies the primary hall. This space is the Capsule's designated funeral hall, and, with its adjustable walls, it provides a flexible approach to mood and ambience. Other spaces within the ground floor include the lecture hall (for talks on local history etc.), café/waiting area, staff rooms, postcard storage, and the story towers.
The room also features a track. This allows the deceased to be easily transported to the elevator behind the upload bed.

To tie in with the Black Country history that inspired this project, this memorial garden pays homage to past workers of the Black Country within the nail making industry.

Welcome to the Black Country Capsule - This short video sequence showcases one of the Capsule's signature rooms and acts as a welcome message, displayed in the foyer, to its visitors. The Capsule has three primary purposes. The first is as a crematorium (the facilities for which are located below in its basement), the second is as an events centre (for funerals, weddings, and the like), and the last is as a physical and digital archive. Overall, the Black Country Capsule aims to provide a means of celebrating and remembering the lives of ordinary people within the Black Country.

The Upload Room - This is where a visitor's consciousness is taken to then be sent to the digital archives below. The space is lush and green to provide a comfortable environment for the individual nearing death.

Materiality Longevity - Time is a significant theme within this project. To reflect this within the Capsule, its rammed earth elements, such as its outer retaining wall, are designed to wear away faster than anything steel. The intention is to have the five-storey central steel structure (which houses the event halls, archives, and Upload Room) remain, while everything else turns to rubble. The digital and physical material within this structure is hoped to be preserved and found.
