Development - The design in its final form saw many alterations to adjust both visual and functional elements, beginning as a simple frame silhouetting the form of a standard Grandfather clock.

Amathos - Amathos is a grandfather clock with a sand driven weight mechanism that draws inspiration from connections between the movement of volume and the passing of time, exploring this through direct interaction from users and the output of audio stimuli as sand falls down the frame. The sound element and act of refilling the vessels are designed to encourage users to take time for themselves, with the sand poured into the vessel providing a clear indication of this time, and the audio feedback providing a clear way to engage with the process.

Xylo - Xylo is a musically inspired coat hook, designed to announce a return to the home. As users place items onto the hook, the arm spins about its pivot and the beater plays a set of user configured xylophone keys.

Design Ideation - The aim of these projects is to explore methods of emphasizing consequential analogue sound, achieved through creating a soundscape of limited yet effective sensory output. The design process began by creating image boards that combined elements of musicality and common interactions with everyday items and activities: winding a clock, tidying away shoes, visiting a garden and knocking on a door.

Amathos - Interaction - To begin the movement of sand, the user first lifts the dish from the base plate up to the hollow vessel. The sand poured in will be slowly released until empty, with the decreasing mass of the hollow weight causing it to rise as the other descends.

Xylo - Rotation - When the arm travels in either direction the keys are struck by the beater, providing musical feedback
