I’m Shenying Fan, a graduate of BA (Hons) Landscape Architecture. Throughout my degree I have been interested in landscape led urban design. My final year project explores how we create an inclusive environment prioritising safe and welcoming environments for women.
The project sits in the centre of Birmingham. Both the site location and concept were inspired by my own experience of the city, its impact on my emotional and mental wellbeing and feelings of unsafety. The materiality and planting throughout the design contrasts from its postindustrial vernacular heritage, creating a safe oasis in the city. A green network runs through the site and provides a safe space for women to journey through and rest a while. The central pink road connects with the major spaces in the site that provide a variety of activities for women to experience alone and socially with others. The route and interspersed spaces are overlooked and provide views out the city reinforcing an open but protected landscape experience.
