I am a Chinese jewellery designer studying in Birmingham City University. Because of some personal characteristics, I record happening of daily life and re-imagine them into narrative works. Recording, reflecting through material and process to express personal experience is my main design method.
The inspiration of the ‘lost’ series is from my birthmark on my chest. In my opinion, a birthmark is more than just different color skin on my body, since I get various judgements about it. This makes me deeply feel that my thoughts about it will change with the people around me. The mainstream ideas of society bind us like a huge net and let us gradually lose our individual characteristics and become the same. I want to use jewelry to describe the process. The “birthmark” made of metal expresses characteristics that seem not bad but do not follow the norm. Plenty of colors means we are different while black represents darkness and regret. The metal weaving represents the invisible bonding of the surrounding judgment on us. While losing inlaid stones, the dark color of the metal plates gradually darkens that means that we are being attuned by society.
