This is a memorial-themed piece in the form of an obelisk. I was inspired by the small obelisk decorations I saw in the museum after returning from a trip to Egypt. The obelisk has different meanings in different display settings, but it carries a commemorative function in different contexts.
My obelisk represents my learning experience and is a reminder of that time. During my first semester of study, I had a lot of difficulty in making soldering, brooches, and metal weaving before I learnt. I also received help from my fellow students and teachers, which helped me to be clearer and more confident in my creations.
I moved from graphic photography to jewellery and my ideas will never be fixed within the jewellery, they will start as a flat visual pattern, become a three-dimensional object, and then add accessories that can become jewellery. This project made me start to think about the different meanings of an object in different contexts and how different expressions of a symbol would change. In the future, I will also continue to explore interesting symbols and develop them from flat to three-dimensional.
