The concept of this project is centered around a vision of a new modern carbon economy. Contrary to historical and vernacular use and interaction with carbon in the black country, the value of carbon as an element would not be in the combustion of coal for energy but in embodying the carbon into valuable biological materials. A neo-black country ‘green country’ where people can then trade their time, skill, and personal carbon balances for materials of value to them, all the while reducing the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere, as opposed to releasing more. This economy places more value on the production of natural materials as opposed to the unnatural process of burning them for energy. This project seeks to optimize the ability to utilize natural cycles and processes through its program, tectonics, form, and facade articulation, alongside integrated environmental strategies and systems that facilitate this economy. Ultimately enabling the transformation of waste atmospheric carbon into useful natural products such as biofuels, food, and building materials to feed the public house and benefit the local environment.
