Before joining the BA Design Management course, I had a background in jewellery. Coming from art and design at college, I
completed a qualification at British Academy of Jewellery in jewellery design and manufacturing, for which I was nominated for student of the year. During this time I learned much of the core basic jewellery making skills and I enjoyed it so much that I went on to do the HND Jewellery and Silversmithing at the School of Jewellery. While I enjoyed my time at the School of Jewellery, I started to realise that my skills were very niche and narrow and wanted to have knowledge in other areas. This was what drew me towards the BA Design Management course.
I have had experience in woodworking, owning a little business selling homeware and gifts at craft fairs and online. Being a
successful salesperson is a really difficult skill that required a lot of confidence, but I have always tried to do things like this to improve confidence, which is a major weakness of mine. I have always been a creative person and enjoy trying out new artistic techniques of design and manufacturing.
Future Plans:
I would like to go onto the MA Design Management course because I feel like this past year on the BA has been far too short and that there is more for me within design management before I go onto getting a job. I have identified a few key areas I want to work on in over the course of the the next year, to give me the best chance of doing my best in the working world. Doing the masters programme will hopefully open many more doors for me, that a BA alone wouldn’t. I like the idea of working abroad at some point in life, and having a high level of education seems to be necessary for many visa programmes, especially the United States. I would like to have as many options as I can, and the masters programme will equip me with the knowledge, the confidence, and many more opportunities wherever I end up.
